Sequence of a Horse in Motion (VR)

VR Installation (2018)

About

The space is vast and dim, almost dark. It smells faintly of horses. Somewhere in the distance, a small patch of bark mulch softens the ground. A live horse encounters a dancer in this spot in the evenings - upside down, connected by a bandage. During the day, participants take on the position of the dancer - upside down, connected by a bandage, the horse in VR. Two versions of the same drifting image, held briefly in the same air.

Under the dim light, two world transition aides wait for the participant with a VR headset. They are calm and assist with the transition. The participant empties their pockets. Then, slowly, their body is lifted until they are upside down. Inside the headset, a horse appears. It moves in steady circles around the participant.

They look down—toward their own body—and notice a bandage. It connects them to the horse. With every step it takes, the bandage unwinds. The world transition aides wrap the bandage around the participant synchronously to what they see in VR. The circling continues. The distance closes. The horse comes nearer, closer, until it is almost within reach. Then it stops. Everything pauses. Gently, you are lowered back down.

Artist Statement

"At first, the VR version of "Sequence of a Horse in Motion" seemed to really just solve the problem of not always having a live horse to present this dream sequence. During the concept phase, when all the cards were in the air of how this could work, it got super exciting to literally offer the audience a new position in this: to take the place of the dancer in the live piece. This work made me fall in love with taking good care of my audience and their journey from beginning to end. "
